Celebrating the Spirit of the American West: An Interview with Chris Thompson

**Interviewer:** Chris, thank you for joining us today. Your work is truly unique. What inspired you to start creating handbags from recycled cowboy boots?

**Chris Thompson:** Thank you for having me! The idea came from my love for the American West and a desire to create something that truly captures its spirit. I’ve always been drawn to the rugged beauty of cowboy boots—they tell a story of the land, hard work, and a life lived with passion. I wanted to take something that already had a history and transform it into something new, something that could continue to be part of someone's life in a meaningful way. That’s how the idea of turning old boots into bags came about.

**Interviewer:** It’s fascinating how you combine sustainability with western style. How do you go about selecting the boots that you use for your bags?

**Chris Thompson:** Each pair of boots has its own character, and that’s really what I’m looking for when I’m selecting materials. I source boots that are made from high-quality leather, with unique patterns, textures, or colors that I know will make a statement. I love finding boots that have a bit of wear and tear because it adds to the story of the bag. It’s important to me that every bag has a past, a sense of history that you can feel when you carry it.

**Interviewer:** Your bags are known for their craftsmanship and attention to detail. Can you walk us through the process of creating one of your pieces?

**Chris Thompson:** Absolutely! Each bag starts with selecting the perfect boot. Once I have the boots, I carefully deconstruct them, then the fun begins! What kind of bag will that boot be? I then hand-cut and assemble the pieces, often incorporating additional leather or hardware to enhance the design. The process is very hands-on and time-intensive because I want to ensure that every bag is beautiful but also durable, and functional. The finishing touches, like the fringe, beading, concho and straps, are just as important as the exterior because they add to the overall experience of using the bag.

**Interviewer:** You describe your bags as wearable works of art. How do you balance style with functionality?

**Chris Thompson:** That’s a great question! For me, it’s about creating something that’s as practical as it is beautiful. I design each bag with the end user in mind, considering how they’ll use it on a daily basis. Whether it’s a crossbody hipster or a larger tote, I think about the little details that make the bag easy and comfortable to use. At the same time, I want the bag to be a statement piece, something that reflects the wearer’s personality and style. It’s about combining cowgirl chic with western sophistication in a way that feels authentic and effortless.

**Interviewer:** Your customers are clearly drawn to the unique nature of your bags. What do you think it is about your creations that resonates with them?

**Chris Thompson:** I think it’s the combination of quality, uniqueness, and the artistic designs. My customers appreciate the artistry and the fact that no two bags are the same. They’re looking for something that stands out, something that you can’t find anywhere else. My bags are a way for them to express their individuality and their connection to the western lifestyle. Plus, they love that they’re getting a piece that’s sustainable and eco-friendly. It’s about owning something special that aligns with their values and makes them feel great every time they use it.

**Interviewer:** Finally, what does the future hold for Chris Thompson Bags? Are there any new projects or designs on the horizon?

**Chris Thompson:** I’m always thinking about what’s next! Right now, I’m working on expanding my collection to include more accessories, like the leather earrings we recently introduced. My goal is to continue to grow the business while staying true to the values and craftsmanship that have gotten me this far. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me!

**Interviewer:** Chris, thank you so much for sharing your story and passion with us. Your work truly captures the spirit of the American West, and we can’t wait to see what you create next.
